Coral Reef Conservation is a Collaborative Work

Bulletin COREMAP II vol 3 2007

The condition of Indonesia’s coral reefs is definitely deteriorating. A study was conducted and the results issued by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences showing the proportion of coral reefs in good and excellent condition is deteriorating, respectively from 31.5% in 2005 to 30.6% in 2007. Obviously, something should be done to conserve our reefs which is not only the responsibility of the government but also all stakeholders.

Today, there are 17 districts which have ratified the KKLD approach through District Regulations, such as: Indramayu, Alor, Pesisir Selatan, Berau, East Lombok, Muna, Sorong, Lingga, Raja Ampat and Batang. The total size of the area so designated is 2.3 million hectares. Besides this, through the COREMAP program, it is expected as many as 15 municipalities/regencies will adopt their own MCAs as KKLDs. Recently, 6 new KKLDs have been inaugurated, 1 KKLDs in Mentawai District, 1 KKL in Batam city, and 4 KKLDs of 900,000 ha in Raja Ampat. As of today, we have 8.3 million hectare of KKLD established.

This edition of the COREMAP II Bulletin provides information on the National Coral Reef Conference and other related activities. Beside that, there are some regular columns which have also been published in internal communication media. Any suggestions for future topics or articles for the Bulletin are always welcome.
